Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH)

The LADSE DHH program serves students with hearing losses ranging from mild to profound.  Students may have hearing loss as their only disability or they may have multiple disabilities.  Placement within the LADSE Deaf and Hard of Hearing program is determined by each student’s educational plan and is individualized based upon goals developed by teachers, therapists, and other members of the school team in consultation with the parents.

The LADSE DHH program is located at Hinsdale South High School in Darien, IL and at the Transition Center in LaGrange Park, IL.

The LADSE Deaf and Hard of Hearing Program at Hinsdale South consists of the following programs and services.  Students are appropriately placed based on academic ability in one or more of the programs we offer. A typical student will have a combination of various programs throughout their four years and will be provided with communication access per their IEP.
  • Community Based Program: The Community Based program is for the deaf and hard of hearing students who also have additional disabilities. The students are taught using a model that incorporates experiences in the community to teach daily living skills. A functional, daily management curriculum is used in this program. Upon completion of course requirements, students may be eligible to attend the offsite DHH/LADSE Transition Center.

  • Applied Program: The goals of the Applied program are to develop functional, core academics and reading for information skills, which are then connected to community-based learning experiences. The curriculum is modified to meet the individual learning styles and accommodations needed for each student.  Many of the students at this level struggle with the English language due to their hearing loss and/or environmental influences. Applied level classes have an academic focus that prepares the student for post-secondary work/technical training or community college options.

  • Academic Program: The Academic classes parallel the standard high school programs in curricular content, but they are taught by certified teachers of the deaf and hard of hearing.  The classes are modified to accommodate lower language and reading levels that typically occur in the deaf and hard of hearing population.  The post-secondary expected outcomes of this level are four year college, two year college or technical training.

All of the above programs are managed and taught by certified teachers of the deaf and hard of hearing.

  • Mainstream Program: While all students are mainstreamed for some courses, the students at this level are partially or fully mainstreamed.  These students have adequate academic and language skills to handle the faster-paced curriculum presentation and the reading requirements of the regular courses. For the students who choose the regular high school classes, a sign language interpreter is provided.
