Coronavirus COVID-19
Executive Director's Letter to Parents -
Remote Learning
April 3, 2020
Dear LADSE Families,
I hope that this message finds you and your family well as we all learn to navigate through the COVID-19 pandemic. As many of you are aware, Governor Pritzker announced on Tuesday, March 31 that out of concern for the health and safety of our students and staff members, brick and mortar schools would remain closed through Thursday, April 30, 2020. I wanted to share the following information on how LADSE intends to provide support, instruction, and related services during this period of Remote Learning. Our plan for providing instruction to students with disabilities has two priorities:
1. How are you and your family managing given the pandemic?
Please let your LADSE team know if any new needs have developed in the last few weeks. Examples might include how your child responded to the most recent week of continued learning opportunities, a family member who is ill, a family member who lost a job, etc. We ask these questions so that we can put your child’s learning in the coming weeks into context.
2. What services and supports are necessary for your child as they learn at home?
This will be the biggest portion of the conversation. Your child’s case manager will discuss the plan of support for providing instruction and related services to your child during this period of Remote Learning. This will include the development of anIndividualized Remote Learning Plan. Collaboration between parents and our school team will be a critical component for creating an appropriate plan.
3. What events are scheduled to occur in the coming weeks for your child?
Some of our students currently have open evaluations. Annual reviews also may still need to be held for some students. Now that all of our schedules have changed, we will touch base on how to address any upcoming required special education meetings.
These are uncertain times and we want to work with you to create an appropriate and consistent plan for your child during this time away from school-based instruction. Should you have any questions or concerns in the meantime, please do not hesitate to reach out.
Thank you,
Ellie Ambuehl, Ed.D

Our plan for providing instruction to students with disabilities has two priorities:
- Focusing on the health, safety, and welfare of our students and their families.
- Making good faith efforts to provide appropriate, accommodated, and accessible services to students with disabilities in light of the current circumstances. With these priorities in mind, during the coming days, your child’s case manager will be reaching out to you to discuss an Individualized Remote Learning Plan for your child. During this conversation, we ask that you prepare for a discussion on the three questions listed below:
