Trainings and Strands
The LADSE AT Unit provides a variety of training formats and opportunities. These can include large or small group presentations tailored to the districts’ needs. Trainings are offered for general education and special education staff, students and parents. Examples of training topics include technology accessibility, AAC and core vocabulary, PECS, literacy supports, writing productivity, tools to support transitioning students, and Universal Design for Learning.

Start a Core Words Initiative! Implementing Core Words Throughout the School Day Using an “Activity First Approach”
Facilitators: Becky Perthel and Jackie Loftus
Come and learn different ways you can implement core throughout your school day. This strand will include ideas of how to implement core including core word of the week and building activities around core, including using the “Activity First Approach.” During the strand, you will learn the ins and outs of Boardmaker Online and learn about available resources. Strand members will design and share materials and activities to incorporate core throughout the school day.
What is My Emotional IQ and How Can it Help Me in my Working Relationships?
Facilitators: Sandy Chiampas and Kim Hagar
Emotional intelligence is the ability to deal with other people successfully. In this interactive strand, we will learn about the following four aspects of Emotional IQ: self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, and relationship management. Come join us as we explore how to enhance one’s emotional IQ as it relates to working through difficult situations and improving working relationships with colleagues and parents. We will also discuss how to enhance the emotional IQs of the students we work with.
Data Made Easy with Google Forms and Google Sheets
Facilitator: Ellen Deutsch
We take data to monitor students’ progress and skills as well as strategy effectiveness. Wouldn’t it be nice if there was an easier way to review, visualize, analyze, and share data? This hands-on strand will focus on using Google Forms and Google Sheets to monitor goals and student progress, track behavior, collaborate with others, and log therapy and small group sessions.
What’s New in the Wild World of Prompts and Visuals
Facilitator: Sandy Chiampas
In this hands-on strand, learn how to use iPad apps including ChoiceWorks, ChoiceWorks Calendar, Picture Scheduler, First Then, Symbol Support, Custom Boards, Apple Clips and Book Creator as well as Boardmaker Online and iMovie to increase student independent skills. Time will be provided for participants to use the medium of choice to create visuals. The prompting hierarchy, video modeling, social stories, mind mapping, and built-in iOS tools will also be presented.
Dive into Universal Design for Learning

Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is a framework for designing instruction and building inclusive learning environments that meet the needs of every learner. This strand will use the Dive Into UDL (https://www.diveintoudl.com) resources to illustrate how to design accessible materials and infuse technology into lessons to provide voice and choice for all learners.
