The Parent Academy is a series of FREE informal presentations designed specifically for parents of children attending LADSE member districts.

Understanding the Friendship Puzzle

The lifelong social, emotional and health benefits of friendships are well documented, but obtaining and maintaining those relationships can be a challenge for children.  Topics covered in this presentation will include:  What is a friend?  What happens when friendships end?  Why don't they like me?  what are specific strategies that help foster friendships?

 

Street Smarts

Most students know when a situation is bad.  In this workshop we will address all types of situations our children encounter and how to help them deal with it.  A police officer who is also a parent will help you understand the risky situations that are happening around your kids so you can help them make good decisions and stay safe.

 

Holding the Line Without Losing Your Cool:  Dealing with Challenging Behaviors

Learn how to set healthy boundaries, establish fair and reasonable expectations, and use effective strategies for solving behavior problems in a variety of challenging situations.

 

Now You're Talking:  Improving Your Child's Language and Social Skills

A brief overview of language development and the importance of social language development will be addressed.  Techniques and activities that can be used at home to promote language development will also be discussed.

The IEP is a critical component for ensuring that your child's special needs are adequately addressed.  Participants will learn about the IEP process, critical components, and parents' vital role on the IEP team.

Accepting your child as a sexual being can be a challenge but must be acknowledged if you are to help your child become less vulnerable.  Participants will learn strategies for providing their children with a healthy understanding of human sexuality and strategies for avoiding harmful behavior.
